Parylene-based Multilayer coatings, a brand-new technology highly valuable in development of Medical Device but not only!

Applications

First developed to address medical device encapsulation, Parylene-based multilayer coatings also open new doors in many other challenging industries such as power electronic, sensors, microelectronics, etc.

While keeping the advantages of intrinsic properties of Parylene, the multilayer coatings are specially used for:

High barrier properties (>1000 times better than Parylene only):

  • Water vapor transmission rate (WVTR): < 10-3 g/m2/day at 38°C / 50% RH
  • Oxygen transmission rate (OTR): < 10-2 cm3/m2/day at 38°C / 90% RH

Outstanding mechanical behavior and high toughness:

  • Crack Onset Strain (COS): from 1.5% up to 3%
  • No crack propagation through organic layers when strained above COS
  • Barrier properties when strained above COS are maintained at > 70% from initial values

Excellent chemical / bio – stability:

  • Stable in saline solution for > 3 years (accelerated ageing at 67°C in PBS)

As of today, Comelec’s multilayer technology is integrated on different medical devices that are commercially available or are in the approval phase.
